A luxury break in Piemonte; Palazzo Righini

An easy 3 hours drive from Geneva, through the Mont Blanc Tunnel and down past Aosta you can find the vineyards and rolling hills of the beautiful Piemonte region and villages and hamlets away from the tourist trail.

A new hotel in a old historic home lost in Fossano south of Turin, Palazzo Righini is beautifully restored and makes a superb weekend break. From here you can spend the day in Turin with its great food, shopping and Piazzas, head south to the beaches of the Italian Riviera or visit the nearby towns of Alba and Asti.

There are only 24 rooms in the boutique hotel from the basic doubles to the sumptuous suites, all designed with style, some with frescos. The doubles are very good value being priced at 125 Euros per night including breakfast.

The restaurant Antiche is one of the best in the region with creative local dishes and an impressive wine list in an atmospheric wine cellar. The sommelier is excellent and can recommend local wines for each dish.

The wine bar also serves excellent value bar food and is lively, being very popular with the locals. It is excellent value being around 13 Euros for a main course.

What sets the hotel apart is the friendliness of the staff, who give a warm welcome. The service is good and relaxed (not stuffy).

There isn’t a great deal of information in reception about activities in the area but its best to buy a guide book (Rough Guide to Italy is recommended) and quiz the very helpful staff on reception for ideas. There is a nice small spa but unfortunately no pool.

Plan your weekend with a trip to Turin and the local wine region, book one night in the restaurant and one night in the bar and enjoy a fine relaxing luxury break at an unbeatable price… Remember to buy several bottles of Barolo for the way home. On the way back home remember to take a minor detour and go to the Gucci outlet, the Place in Sandigliano.

Doubles from 125 Euros. Open all year.

The Winter snow sports are fantastic and the Summer season is full of festivals, outdoor sports, picnics and barbecues. I have met some great people here from all of the world. Geneva is a cosmopolitan city with lots of cultural events and good restaurants and bars and I hope that through Biskotti I can share a few hidden places I have discovered…
