The ski fairs begin in October and November and you can pick up last years ski’s, equipment and clothing at great prices; On 5 and 6 October is one of the first fairs at Verchaix near Samoens in the French Alps from the afternoon of Saturday 5 until Sunday 6 October. You can combine a trip to the fair with lunch and a hike (see our Guide to Samoens in this Mountains section). The Gstaad Open – see Federer and Wawrinka in action

Roger Federer has had a bad few months by his standards. His straight sets loss to French showman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga at Roland Garros was very disappointing to his fans, as was his second round defeat against the Ukrainian, Sergiy Stakhovsky, who was ranked 116, three weeks ago at Wimbledon. He has now slipped down to number 5 in the rankings and I think he feels that this is a pivotal period in his career. Instead of taking his usual summer break at this time of the year, he has decided to play more tennis and test out a new racket. Last week he played at the ATP event in Hamburg and his new, bigger racket didn’t seem to improve his form as he lost in the semi-finals to Federico Delbonis a 22 year-old Argentine ranked 114. So you can see why some commentators and fans are talking of the demise of Federer. John McEnroe is one of those that has jumped on the bandwagon, saying that he “doesn’t think” that Federer will win any more majors, but I beg to differ. Bol D’Or and International Football

This month; The Bol D’Or sailing regatta and International Football World Cup Qualifier; The 75th Edition of the Bol D’Or sponsored by Mirabeau will take place 14th and 15th June. This is a race from Geneva to the end of the lake, Le Bouveret and back which is 123Km. The race begins at 10am. The race conditions vary considerably and are very unpredictable – it can be absolutely calm without a breath of wind or can be howling gales. “Organised for the first time in 1939, the Bol d’Or has become the most important World regatta on an inland lake. A large and popular nautical festival, the Bol d’Or has become one of the great classics of the international regatta agenda. Sporting highlights around Geneva this month include; 7th International Hot Air Balloon Festival; CANCELLED DUE TO WEATHER CONDITIONS 19 – 21 April Around 30 hot air balloons from the leading European countries and Switzerland take off from Geneva’s parks. 5 flights above the City. Arrive early to take the best photos. Synchronised Swimming; 13 – 14 April; L’Aqua Cup Piscine de Vernets 7 – 7pm 7 – 5pm 19 – 21 April; Badminton Geneva Championships Queue d’Arve 6 – 10pm 9 – 6pm 27 April; Athletics Sports Centre Bout de Monde 12 – 7pm 27 – 28 April; Swimming Vernets 7 – 8pm 7 – 6.30 Skiing Its been an excellent ski season with consistently cold temperatures and good snowfall. Many ski resorts are open until end of April. Best to go to the higher resorts where the snow will hold up well despite higher temperatures this month. In particular Flaine and Grands Montets in Chamonix or Verbier are recommended around Geneva. The Grand Montets in Chamonix often stays open until into May. See the Mountains section for a taste of a weekend skiing in Italy at the high resort of Champoluc in the Aosta Valley (open until April 14).
