Christmas might seem far away but it’s actually right around the corner ! Like every year, there will be Christmas markets everywhere. You’ll find good ones and less good ones. Of course if you have time, you should head to Strasbourg, Basel or Lucerne, as they are much bigger and more interesting there. However, Montreux and Lausanne both have some good things to offer. So why not check them out this Sunday?
Both markets start on Friday and will last till December 24. So you have plenty of time. The Montreux Christmas market has an established reputation. It’s nice to stroll along the lake, enjoy some mulled wine, check out the stalls, find some gifts and shop till you drop… And it’s also the 1st edition of the Lights Festival Lausanne, which looks promising. So why not to head to Montreux and stop by Lausanne on the way back to enjoy these two towns on Sunday? I would start with wandering around Montreux and then come back by Lausanne, to make sure you see the illuminated city at night.
I come from Lyon, the city that has the most amazing light festival from December 6 to December 9. If you have never been, you should definitely check out the famous Fêtes des Lumières once and see all the fabulous shows that are on! But I must admit that even though it’s fantastic, things can get really crowded and it’s only on for one weekend. So if you can’t make it to Lyon, be sure to check out all the lights in Lausanne. There will be 10 pieces of light art, and the whole city will also be covered in lights. Lausanne also has some small but nice Christmas Market.
Geneva will also have small Christmas markets with stalls here and there, but nothing really big. The main market worth going to is in Carouge, which wilk take place on December 14,15 and 16. Geneva will also have nice lights for Christmas, so make sure to especially check out Place de La Fusterie. The Christmas lights are turned on in Geneva on December 1!
