Day Trip to Martigny
My suggestion for this week is to head to Martigny, in Valais, for two reasons: dogs and art!
Martigny is a small town, but it’s very pleasant to walk around. The view is a mix of mountains and vineyards, and there are sculptures everywhere in town – so keep your eyes open. Martigny is a Roman town so, if you have time, be sure to check out the Amphitheatre, ruins and the small castle of la Bâtiaz.
If you like dogs, then the Barry Foundation will interest you. The foundation has open doors and you’ll be able to learn about Great Saint-Bernards. Visit the kennel and familiarise yourself with training, education and care. You can also find out what the Foundation does for this national dog! (Explanations will be given in French and German.) Check out the program here. Open on Saturday, October 27 and Sunday, October 28 from 10am to 4pm. Located on Route des Chantons, 52, a short walk from the train station. Not far from the Barry Foundation, there is also a Saint-Bernard museum for those who want to find out more about the history of the Great Saint-Bernard Hospice and Pass, and to see more, beautiful dogs!
For the art part of your trip, make sure to visit the Pierre Gianadda Foundation because they always have nice exhibitions. At the moment, and until November 25, they have a private collection that is owned by a Swiss couple that includes some pieces by Van Gogh, Picasso and Kandinsky. It’s all about colours! Werner et Gabrielle Merzbacher are presenting more than 100 pieces, and more than 50 artists: Fauvism, Abstract Art and Expressionism are the main genres. Make sure to also check out the garden of the Foundation, with sculptures from International artists. Located on Rue du Forum, 59. Open everyday from 9am to 7pm.
If the weather is nice and you would prefer to walk outside instead of going to museums, then another option is to follow a trail in the vineyards.
If you’re looking for a nice lunch, look no further than the Trois Couronnes in Place du Bourg, 8 which has a bistro feel and a good variety of local dishes. You will need to book (+41 (0)27 723 21 14)
Why not stay for the weekend? Le Jardin de Kabir is a charming guest house, well located in the Old Town. The rooms are stunning and very comfortable and the welcome is warm. Doubles from 200 CHF per night.
