Geneva Out & About: Week of November 12, 2012
This week don’t miss a great hip hop festival, a blues concert, board games for everyone, a fantastic film festival, Cumbia, a Christmas fair and the family village! “Les Automnales” is also still on at Palexpo.
Communes Ikation Hip Hop Festival: This festival aims at showing the true values and the multiple aspects of this rich, but too often undermined, culture. 7 communes have created an association to allow young artists to perform and emphasize creativity, non-violence, respect and tolerance. It started last Friday with a photo exhibition on Boulevard des Promenades. From November 17 onwards there will be open-dances sessions, open mikes nights, and concerts. You can also join one of the workshops and learn how to write, how to make graffiti, slam or sound sampling…Basically be creative! Full program here. La ville en jeux: Play with your family and friends. Go back to the 18th century and discover some great board games from that time. For all ages, even the really little ones. Bag Thursdays: Every Thursday the Geneva Blues Association presents great musicians. This week, it’s a jam session. The location is a bit dark but the atmosphere is always great! 5 CHF for jam sessions, 15CHF for concerts. Full program and information about the association here. Filmar en America Latina: 14th edition of this film festival with a comprehensive program. In various theatres in Geneva and neighbouring France: Grutli cinemas, Bio Carouge, Fondation Arditi and Fonction Cinema in Geneva. Brazil is the guest of honor this year. Don’t miss the Brazilian film, Sudoeste on November 18, with the director in attendance, at the Arditi Auditorium. Another good movie is Un Cuento Chino, at CineVersoix on November 17 or Cine Saussure (Petit-Lancy) on November 22. November 17-December 2.
Fiesta Cumbia: Originally from Columbia, Cumbia music is popular in many South American countries. Dance all night long on great rhythms mixed by La Mama Cumbia. La Gravière. Acacias, November 16. 11pm.
Creative Mornings: How about trying something different this Friday? Originally started in New York, this monthly get-together is now also taking place in Geneva. Once a month, creative people get together for a short lecture and a group discussion. Croissants included. All free. Les Automnales: Autumn Fair. Not only a good way to find out what’s new in the shopping world -and maybe find your Christmas gifts – but also lots of activities and shows. Three main topics for the exhibition are housing, leisure and cooking. Check out the latest innovations! The fair includes lots of demonstrations and fun activities: cooking workshops, after-work drinks with DJs, a treasure hunt, a running race, circus and theatre. 10 CHF. Palexpo. Until November 18.

Tambour Battant Festival. African music and cinema. There will also be a fashion show, theatre and story telling. Don’t miss the concerts of Sidi Touré. The shows will take place in various venues such as Grutli Cinemas, Palladium, MàD, Maison des Associations and Salle du Môle. Details here
