Geneva Out & About: Week of October 8, 2012
Jazz Contreband: Don’t miss out on this great jazz festival! Concerts are all over the region, and are spread between 18 different venues. Concerts are not only taking place in Geneva, but also in Nyon and Annecy. In Geneva, AMR and Le Chat Noir are particularly good places to check-out because of their nice atmosphere. You can also head to Onex or Meyrin (easily accessed by tram), or to Annemasse, where I, personally, won’t miss Marcus Miller on October 23! All of the details are here. Everyday until October 26.
Animatou: International animated movie festival with workshops and films for all ages! They are presenting a lot of short movies, as well as some premieres and documentaries in smaller cinemas, (Grütli, Spoutnik, Bio Cinema, Scalaand Nord-Sud) and larger ones, like Pathé. In their headquarters in Les Grottes, the festival organises workshops, concerts and more! Check out the program to see the times and the venues. Or, follow them on Facebook. Everyday until October 14.
Ethical Fashion Night: Glam, fabulous and ethical! All for free! 3 fashion shows, organic wine-tasting, circus acts, card-reading, pop-up shops and music to dance to, all through the night. The event is organised by NiceFuture – the non-profit association that publishes the Geneva ethical shopping guide. More information on what awaits you on that evening, here. Palladium. Rue du Stand, 3. October 12 at 7.30pm
Le chic: If you don’t know this New York-style lounge yet, I strongly recommend you check it out. It’s a very cozy, live music venue! This week, don’t miss The Postmen on Friday (rock/folk) and Dog Almond (Acoustic) on Saturday. Cover charge is 5 CHF. Rue de Fribourg, 3 – hidden in the basement of L’America. Facebook page here. October 12-13 at 10pm.
Save the date:
Escalade Race on December 1st. Yes, it’s early to talk about this but if you want to join the fun, you have to register before November 1st. The escalade race is one of the most popular events amongst the Genevoise! It’s great to do with friends, colleagues and family! From young kids who run less than 2 km, to adults who run about 7 km, there are distances for all levels. The marmite at the end of the day is a 3.4 km-long race where people get to run in costumes! Some people have amazing ideas, and put a lot of effort into their costumes – as you can see in the photo on the right! Join the fun and run, or attend as a supporter. I can guarantee that the atmosphere is worth it! This year, they have a special longer race on November 30 at night, called Duke race. More info on the website (also in English!).
The Escalade Race is a different event from the actual Fête de l’Escalade, a celebration of the victory of the Swiss over the Duke of Savoy in 1602. The Fête includes a parade that will take place on the weekend of December 7-9 this year. More historical facts on the importance of this event, are here.
WAIT, THERE’S MORE!
Le Jour de la Nuit: An event in neighbouring France to increase awareness about light pollution and the biodiversity of skies. In Ferney Voltaire, you can join the night-walk to the Swiss countryside. The meeting-point is in front of the Ferney swimming pool at 8pm, and te walk is 1.5 hr long. In Prevessin-Moens, you can watch the stars with a mobile planetarium! Meeting-point is at the Parc du Château at 7:30pm. More activities and places here. October 13.
Arare Rock Festival: Free music at this small, local and friendly festival. Plan-Les-Ouates. October 13 at 5pm.
Alla Turca: This Turkish music and film festival has lots of different genres of music, and lots of talented artists! Who doesn’t have a Turkish friend in Geneva? Have you ever wanted to know more about their culture and their music? Here is the opportunity! Whether you like drums, singing, guitar, or good movies, I think you can find something you’ll enjoy in the program! Théâtre Cité Bleue. Until October 13
Scary night: If you are looking for something to do with your kids, head to Chillon Castle (on the lake, just after Montreux) for a fun night. They will have a performance that is full of suprises, and guaranteed to entertain! Tickets are between 15-35 CHF. October 13 from 5pm-11pm. Information here.
Marche de l’Espoir, charity walk: Terre des Hommes organizes this great event every year. It’s a short and fun walk to do with your friends and kids. Going from Pâquis to the botanical gardens and back, as many times as you want, is all you have to do in order to help street kids, orphans and earthquake victims in Haiti. A lot of schools are taking part in this walk, but you can register as an individual, too. You need to find sponsors who will donate money for each tour you walk (or you can sponsor yourself as well – after all, it’s for a good cause!). You can sign-up online, or on-the-spot on the day of the event. If you don’t want to walk, you can sponsor somebody or volunteer to help the NGO with the organisation of the event. The more the merrier, and the more funds raised! This event takes place in all weather conditions! Marche de l’Espoir. October 14 at 11am.
