Hot Air Balloon Festival
I’m taking you out of Geneva again this Sunday, but if you prefer to stay in town, there is quite a lot going on: Black Movie Festival, Antigel Festival, Sunday tales and Sunday concert. Check out our Out & About section for all the details.
The International Hot Air Balloon Festival is taking place in Château d’Oex from Saturday (January 26) to February 3 so you have plenty of time to go but it’s definitely a nice Sunday outing. Château d’Oex is a lovely small town in the Vaud Canton, about 2 hour drive from Geneva. It is about the same by train, via Montreux, it’s a lovely journey as the landscape is gorgeous.
More than 80 hot-air balloons from 18 countries meet in the sky above with a stunning view on the mountains. Each day you can watch the shows that include balloons but also paragliders and airships. All the acrobatic flying is pretty amazing to watch.
You can obviously enjoy local food, mulled wine, crepes and more when you are there. The entrance is CHF 10.- on the weekend, and free during the week.
If you feel like it you can enjoy a ride on one of the balloons or on a helicopter. It’s a bit pricey (299 CHF for the balloon, 60CHF for the helicopter) but it’s definitely something different and the valley of Pays d’En Haut is beautiful to see from above.
On the night of February 2nd, the Night Glow show will celebrate the 35th anniversary of the festival. It starts at 6:45pm and it’s pretty unique!
If you have kids and are free on Wednesday, then take them there. They have a special afternoon for the little ones, with plenty of activities.
