0-5After last month’s holier than thou Qi-balancing discovery, I was on a mission to find more healthy lunchtime options. Not an easy feat in a town where the streets are paved (or pavé-d) in chocolate, and cheese is considered one of your five-a-day.

One of my favourite lunchtime spots is Mango Deck (one in the Old Town and another in Rive). I like the concept:

1)    Stand before a colourful and appetizing display of healthy salads, fresh pastas as well as seafood and meat dishes;

2)    Select your “panier”, (the contents of which they steam if necessary – no frying here);

mango deck3)    Settle your bill;

4)    Your lunch is brought to your table or prepared for take-away;

5)    Tuck in. Bon appétit!

The variety is excellent at Mango Deck. The salads are innovative, textured and packed with goodies and goodness. I often go for a Mango Mango’s salad which includes salmon mi-cuit to perfection, slices of mango, crunchy mange-tout and lemon chutney on a bed of abundant greenery. I also like the tasty black Tiger prawn salad with grapefruit, cranberries and a generous drizzle of orange vinaigrette, and the aromatic coconut chicken satay salad is certainly one to try too.

The pasta is freshly-made as if straight from “nonna’s” kitchen. There is plenty of choice with truffle tortellini, fagottini with Parma ham, orrecchiette with salmon and some oriental-inspired sauces among the chef’s creations.

I’m working my way through the seafood dishes – red mullet tagine is high on my tastebuds’ wish-list along with Basque-style dourade.

For all the saintliness, dessert must surely be a given. I suggest you leave room for a fondant au chocolat, a tiramisu or some fresh pineapple with basil.

The Mango Deck in the Old Town has a terrace – perhaps we should call it a deck? – which makes it a popular sunny lunchtime spot. Service is friendly and very efficient with  reasonable prices given the generous portion sizes – main dishes at around CHF 16 and desserts for around 5 CHF.

About the Author

Originally from the UK, I have a legal background. I have been in the Geneva area since 2005 and love the mountains, the lake and the quality of life here. The Winter snow sports are fantastic and the Summer season is full of festivals, outdoor sports, picnics and barbecues. I have met some great people here from all of the world. Geneva is a cosmopolitan city with lots of cultural events and good restaurants and bars and I hope that through Biskotti I can share a few hidden places I have discovered…
