June; Festival season kick-off!
Music is definitely an integral part of the summer ambiance… The first festival of the season in the Geneva area is the Caribana Festival, which takes place in June in Crans-sur-Nyon (more commonly known simply as Crans), a 20-minute drive from Geneva.
Caribana likes to be known as the “smallest biggest festival of the region” – small in size, but big in reputation. It has managed to keep its small size over the years, in its efforts to preserve an intimate atmosphere and great quality of music, in a beautiful setting on the shores of Lake Geneva at Crans harbour. This year the festival will take place first weekend of June 4 – 7, with the last day (Sunday) – the “Caribateens” – dedicated to pre-teenagers and teenagers.
The festival organises various activities and entertainment options for kids and going to Caribana on Sunday can be a nice outing for the whole family. As for the real deal – the concerts, Caribana festival strives to please all tastes in music by offering a diverse programme and array of artists. Each evening tends towards a certain style, generally including rock, hip hop, funk etc. Don’t forget to throw in a few big names – Caribana is certainly small in size, but huge in what artists it manages to offer: The lineup is definitely impressive and the setting is worth a detour. Another musical highlight of June is the “Fête de la Musique” or World Music Day, officially celebrated on 20 – 22 June – but festivities are organised over the whole weekend. Keep an eye open for the Geneva programme which will be revealed on 6 June: www.fetedelamusique.ch.
And if you feel like a preview before the weekend of the 21st, head up to Nyon on Saturday 15 June – festivities will start a week before everywhere else with a number of concerts and animations taking place: www.nyonmusique.ch
