Samoens is a stunning Medieval style village, only 50 minutes from Geneva in the French Alps.
Its well worth a day trip, has a lovely main square and is famous for stone sculptures. You can visit the Botanical Gardens above the village or take stunning walks along the River Arve or by the lakes in the valley. There are also fantastic mountain hiking and biking routes in Spring/Summer and Autumn.
For a small village, Samoens has a surprisingly good number of excellent restaurants with nice food and ambience;

Le 8 Monts is a small intimate brasserie in the main square, which has a fresh imaginative and well priced menu and a warm welcome (Place de L’Eglise – you will need to reserve as there are few tables).
Le Monde a L’Envers in the centre of the village is one of the best restaurants here with a nice terrace on sunny days and a warm interior. Good Food and Wine menu with local seasonal specialities. The Autumn menu is a favourite with wild boar and other Autumn specials.
More casual options include “Le Louisiane” restaurant – good pizza’s in a wood fired oven, nice salads and a good tartiflette, “La Fandioleuse”, a very atmospheric creperie with both sweet and salty crepes and Cider and “Les Tartines a Martine” for a light lunch and coffee/sandwiches.
“Aux Becs a Fleu” also gets excellent reviews for a more traditional set French dinner.
Samoens place
There are few quality hotels to stay in Samoens other than the 3 star Neige et Roc or the well located Hotel Les Glaciers (which has basic rooms). A better option is to stay in rented apartments/chalets or Bed and Breakfast.

We have been in the region since 2002 and have many apartments and chalets available (and even a Chateau to stay at) through friends and contacts.
Property prices have increased considerably since the Grand Massif Express lift was built but still remain reasonable in comparison to many other resorts. MGM have built several developments in the village with new apartments and chalets.
