Step into Eastside and discover a fresh, new experience in Geneva.
Previously housing a shop called ‘Village’ the building at 9 Place des Eaux-Vives has been under construction for quite some time. The boarded up windows exhibited scenes of the New York skyline yet offered no clue as to what lay beneath. The mystery surrounding Eastside sparked up quite a tête-à-tête amongst friends – would it be transformed into a contemporary bar? Perhaps a new hair salon, or even an art gallery? For weeks I avidly tried to find the answer and could find nothing. Then one day, all of a sudden, the boards were taken down, the doors were opened and all was revealed – it turns out Eastside is a rather trendy clothes shop.
Now the general consensus is that shopping in Geneva can often be a rather insipid experience. On the one hand you have high-end designer boutiques – an exclusive shopping experience that only the truly privileged can afford – and on the other you have a limited selection of high street stores that are pretty uninspiring and leave a lot to be desired.
That is until Eastside burst onto the scene. As you pass through the huge doors it’s like a breath of fresh air as you enter a refreshing, retail experience. With a whole host of men and women’s clothing and accessories on offer there’s an equilibrium of designer brands alongside high quality, affordable goods. There’s a definite edge to the fashion available here with brands such as; Flying Monkey, Scotch and Soda, J Brand, Chan Luu, Deux Lux, Citizens of Humanity and many more.
The shop is set in a beautiful corner building with full length windows proudly displaying an assortment of wares. Set on several levels, the retail space is pleasing to the eye – there is a distinct industrial feel to Eastside’s territory with grey slate and wooden flooring, wrought iron railings, walls of exposed brickwork and ceilings scored with steadfast steel beams. With the addition of a funky fireplace on the ground floor, complete with leather sofa and TV you could almost be in a stylish warehouse apartment in New York.
The clothing is arranged in a pleasing fashion utilizing huge metal frame shelving, a variety of tables and wooden crate boxes. Wall to floor mirrors and moody lighting add depth to the space with industrialised light fittings and the odd chandelier thrown in for good measure. As you wander around the store quirky display features emerge, such as Polaroid cameras, paint tins, tool kits and voluminous enclosed glass jars filled with accessories. It is this attention to detail that enriches your shopping experience as you discover new elements – notably the squad of superhero figurines guarding the footwear – The Incredible Hulk is even weight lifting a converse trainer!
Not only is there a vast array of clothing at Eastside but also an Aladdin’s cave of accessories. A plethora of shoes, handbags, jewellery, scarves, belts and more awaits you, just itching to update any outfit.
The staff at Eastside are super friendly, ready to greet you as you walk through the door and eager to help with any queries you might have. In fact they are so welcoming there is even a drinks bar on the ground floor serving a rainbow of syrups including lychee, banana, kiwi and frosted mint flavours.
Eastside is ever so slightly off the beaten track of Geneva’s main shopping district but if you’re looking for a retail space that emanates a bit of creativity and imagination with some on trend threads to match, it is definitely worth a visit.
