A friend invited us to Sunday brunch at Brasserie des Halles de l’ile and I groaned.

Sunday brunch has great potential here but never quite delivers. In the past, I have been annoyed by the disorganised service with tables left dirty and uncleared, the fact that there are often birds flying inside (never ideal when you are eating) and the bland food. The Brasserie des Halles is one of Geneva’s old Slaughterhouses – its a great designed modern space overlooking the river with tables inside and out.

The ample Sunday brunch buffet is very well presented but the quality has never left me impressed. “Sometimes less is more” and there are better more reasonable places in Geneva. I have visited several times over the last few years both with larger and smaller groups. The price has also gone up considerably and now is 39 CHF per person including coffee/tea but excluding other drinks. Therefore it’s been a while since I visited…

However, today the Brasserie showed its better side. I turned up later (around 1.30pm) to join a large group and although busy and noisy, things ran smoothly. The service was better organised and they have separated out the coffee/tea area. The coffee was vastly improved and the tea fresh with leaves. Service was more polite and tables were cleared promptly. I had a quick chat with one of the Chefs who was very friendly and said that they had been making small improvements and changes.

The buffet is vast with an array of salmon, salads and pastries with a traditional English breakfast option and two main course options. There is also now a large selection of deserts and waffles/pancakes.

I tried a few of the starters,  salmon tartar, pizza slice and mozzarella/tomato;  These were quite tasty although the mozzarella/tomato was bland. For main course I had a lamb casserole with rice which was excellent and fish in a provencale style sauce. The cheesecake and carrot cake desert was also nicely made. We stayed several hours and at 39 CHF price/quality was ok.

My son did spot a small bird flying around inside but overall Sunday brunch had been a good experience.

Thankfully the Brasserie is back on the list – hopefully it will stay there…
