Pumpkin Festivals and Animated Films

October 01, 2012 / by / 0 Comment

Autumn is definitely here! I don’t know about you, but I personally dread this time of the year:  October and November is when everything starts turning grey, the days get shorter, and there is no snow in the mountains yet. Luckily, autumn means it’s pumpkin time! Whether you’re looking to carve them or eat them, why not check out some pumpkin patches?   This weekend you’ll be able to taste 100 different varieties of squash at 1001 courges in Bavois in Vaud! (It’s possible to get there by train via Renens). For something closer, head to Corsier, just outside of Geneva (Bus G with the TPG). There is a small village fest, in the schoolyard, and you can buy pumpkins there. If the weather is bad what about relaxing and watching a film? Whether you go to the cinema or stay at home, they’re always nice to watch! Well, guess what? There is a great International animated film festival that actually starts this Saturday. The program of Animatou on Sunday will have a pixilation workshop, movies for kids, a film premiere with the Director in attendance  (Le Jour des Corneilles) and an Andreas Hykade’s retropective. Check out the program to see the […]

Geneva Out & About: Week of September 24, 2012

September 24, 2012 / by / 0 Comment

There is a lot  to look forward to this week; including outdoor movies, festivals in Pâquis, Oktoberfest, an Australian festival and more! Ciné Chaises Longues: If you like outdoor cinemas, then grab your sweaters and blankets, and get ready to join this great initiative by Pré en Bulle – an association created to reinforce the community bond in Les Grottes. They will be showing 3 movies from the Soviet Union, from the 1920s. Films start under the stars at 8.30pm. I will be there early to grab a drink and to taste some pirojki (a Russian and Ukrainian specialty). The bar opens at 7.45pm on Rue de la Sibérie (Square Berger). The good news is that they will show the films even if it’s raining, but please note that there will then be a change of location. (Rain Location: Ilot 13 on rue de Montbrillant). Les Grottes. September 26-28.   Sonopack Festival and Les Pâquis sont à la rue: two big events in Pâquis this weekend! Sonopack aims to support local artists, while also collaborating with International ones. Fantastic DJs will be mixing all styles of music at Salle du Môle, Silencio, La Petite Reine, L’Aiglon and other venues (check out the full program here). […]

Geneva Out & About: Week of September 17, 2012

September 11, 2012 / by / 0 Comment

Highlights of the week: cycle for charity, go dancing in a theater, see how great cultural projects can involve the local population, discover a fantastic singer and more! Tous en Selle with the Red Cross How about doing a bit of sport for a good cause? Why not join this cycling event organised in the Geneva countryside, in the villages of Presinge and Jussy? The more 10 Km tours you do, the more money you will raise to support local kids, by helping to pay for their education and holidays. You can register online or on-the-spot when you go on Sunday. They even have a daycare if you want to drop off your kids! If you don’t like cycling, you can also go in order to support the riders and enjoy the concerts and other activities in the village. Presinge, from 9am to 5pm on September 23. Le grand bal de l’Orangerie This is your last chance to enjoy a great cultural event in the middle of Parc La Grange. This summer theatre is having a closing party from 6pm to 3am. There will be all kinds of music – disco, funk, rock and electro. A lot of people get […]

Solar-Powered Cinema on Tour

September 10, 2012 / by / 0 Comment

Cinema Sud Helvetas is an itinerant open-air cinema that runs on solar energy. How is this, you might ask? Well, it travels the roads via bicycles and trailers so, during the day, the solar panels recharge the battery-operated projector for the evening session. This unique concept allows cinema-goers to watch films while respecting and protecting the environment. Once the canvas screen is stretched out between two trees, spectators are welcomed and they can bring their own chair or blanket – whatever they would like in order to be comfortably seated! The films shown during the tour are produced in countries where Helvetas Swiss runs development projects. With Cinema Sud, the Helvetas Organisation promotes the understanding of other cultures, and also encourages viewers to examine global interdependency and act conscientiously. Marylaure Décurnex and Jorrit Bachmann take the solar cinema concept across Switzerland, and become projectionists in the evening! “Even the Rain”…and the lightning The evening I chose to go and watch one of their projections was Tuesday August 21. It had been a very hot day and my husband and I decided that “Even the Rain” (the film scheduled for that evening) sounded very refreshing! We took our chairs and arrived […]

Geneva Out & About: Week of August 27, 2012

August 27, 2012 / by / 0 Comment

Like every year at this time, I hear a lot of people complain that summer is over and that there’s nothing left to do in Geneva. Although I agree it’s a pity that a lot of fun events are spread over 8 weeks only, I can say for certain that there is still a lot going on in town! Just take a look at my selection for this week: whether you want to take a trip to the theatre, go to a music festival or rollerblade, the list is long! Participatory Theatre: Have you ever dreamt of being an actor? I know I have! Well, this is your chance! “Basile et Bertrand jouent au PAV” is a great concept. PAV stands for “Praille-Acacias-Vernets”: there is a huge project to turn this industrial area into a real neighborhood by improving housing and mobility. The city is also building new playgrounds and parks to make it more pleasant for living and hanging out. The artistic community of Geneva definitely wants to be part of this transformation! Basile and Bertrand are shooting a movie to show how they see the PAV. The idea is to include people in their movie who actually live […]
