The first festival of the season in the Geneva area is the Caribana Festival, which takes place in June in Crans-sur-Nyon (more commonly known simply as Crans), a 20-minute drive from Geneva.

Free concerts all summer in Parc de la Grange

Yes, it is still possible to be entertained for free – and even by the same high quality standards as with a paid ticket or entry fee. And the setting is beautiful, in Parc de la Grange in Eaux-Vives, not far from Baby Plage, hidden away in a clearing surrounded by trees.

Lots of music festivals and concerts this week! Styles for everyone! Highlights also include the Escalade race in the Old Town, the circus and the Humanitarian career fair. Barkavin: A great opportunity to do something different this week and taste local wine on a boat. 20CHF. Meet local producers from Geneva countryside, learn about the wine, try it and why not buy some? Jardin Anglais pier. November 29-30, 6pm-10pm Festival Face H:  Creative and innovative music festival to promote unknown talented  artists. Started in 2006, usually taking place at l’Usine, this year it’s been moved to another place we love and can strongly recommend: Théâtre de la Parfumerie. Don’t miss Moondog project and the Ghanaian start Ebo Taylor! November 30 – December 2. Vents de l’Est: Music from Slavic countries. Geneva Out & About: Week of November 19, 2012

This week, head to AMR for some jazz, enjoy the Akouphene Festival, observe the skies, listen to some good stories and don’t miss Les Créatives Onex Festival! The South American film festival is still on as well; Akouphene Festival: 10th edition for this very special electro music festival. 20 CHF per concert. Don’t miss Rue du Nord / Sinlab “The Flying Dutchmen” on Friday, an interaction between sound and video. Most concerts take place on Bateau-Geneve at 8:30pm, on Quai Gustave Ador but there will also be a performance by Brice Catherin at the Saint Jean Library on Saturday afternoon. I am looking forward to the brunch and the trumpet concert by Mazen Kerbaj  on Sunday at the Villa Berlusconi in Grand-Lancy, a really nice setting. November 23-25 AMR Jam Session: If you like jazz, every Tuesday, the AMR (Association to encourage improvised music) has great musicians come and play together. Free entrance. They also have regular concerts on other nights (CHF 20). This week, don’t miss: Stand up comedians, an afterwork concert, chocolate fair and Halloween parties of all kinds. International Comedy Club: In need of a good laugh? Another busy week with a great multicultural festival, some very good musicians in town, a taste of Brazil and autumn festivals! InteGREAT Festival: A couple of weeks ago, Biskotti published an article about multiculturalism in Geneva. This festival is a great way to celebrate and promote integration, diversity and cultural exchanges. On the menu: flamenco, tango and martial arts! Bolivian food, amongst others, debates on cultural identity, book readings, movies and art exhibitions. Full program here. Maison de Quartier de la Jonction. Avenue de Sainte-Clotilde, 18bis. October 17-20. Les jeudis de la guitare – Guitar Thursdays: This is a great, monthly guitar concert to attend! Jazz Contreband: Don’t miss out on this great jazz festival! Concerts are all over the region, and are spread between 18 different venues. Concerts are not only taking place in Geneva, but also in Nyon and Annecy. In Geneva, AMR and Le Chat Noir are particularly good places to check-out because of their nice atmosphere. You can also head to Onex or Meyrin (easily accessed by tram), or to Annemasse, where I, personally, won’t miss Marcus Miller on October 23! All of the details are here. Everyday until October 26. Animatou: International animated movie festival with workshops and films for all ages! They are presenting a lot of short movies, as well as some premieres and documentaries in smaller cinemas, (Grütli, Spoutnik, Bio Cinema, Scalaand Nord-Sud) and larger ones, like Pathé. Geneva Out & About: Week of September 24, 2012

There is a lot  to look forward to this week; including outdoor movies, festivals in Pâquis, Oktoberfest, an Australian festival and more! Ciné Chaises Longues: If you like outdoor cinemas, then grab your sweaters and blankets, and get ready to join this great initiative by Pré en Bulle – an association created to reinforce the community bond in Les Grottes. They will be showing 3 movies from the Soviet Union, from the 1920s. Films start under the stars at 8.30pm. I will be there early to grab a drink and to taste some pirojki (a Russian and Ukrainian specialty). The bar opens at 7.45pm on Rue de la Sibérie (Square Berger). The good news is that they will show the films even if it’s raining, but please note that there will then be a change of location. (Rain Location: Ilot 13 on rue de Montbrillant). Les Grottes. September 26-28.   Sonopack Festival and Les Pâquis sont à la rue: two big events in Pâquis this weekend! Sonopack aims to support local artists, while also collaborating with International ones.
