The battle of Les Terrasses
With a hot July and August its a pleasure to see several outdoor bars and terraces open along the lakeside.
Les Voiles has recently opened at Geneve Plage. With 600 sq metres of outdoor white sofas, palm trees and decking, this is the place to be in Geneva at the moment and attracts a more sophisticated smart crowd.
There are stunning views across the lake from the bar – its an ideal place to watch the sunset and is a fantastic location. When we visited the bar on Saturday night it was full (call to reserve a table). The music was good but would be improved by more speakers and a better sound system and a better layout for the dancefloor (perhaps on part of the beach so you can dance on the sand). The evening started out fairly relaxed but got livelier after 11pm.
There is a basic menu for food with burgers/tapas but there is a missed opportunity to have a more sophisticated menu. The bar menu could also be more comprehensive. There is only one type of Gin (Bombay Sapphire) where there should be more choice (Tanqueray, for example). Gin and Tonics were served occasionally with Lemon, Cucumber or Lime – there was little consistency with service. The white wine was good, Aligote, Bourgogne but surprisingly the beer was served in a plastic glass whilst the rest of the drinks were served in proper glasses. During the week, last orders around Midnight and 1am at weekends. Reserve a table with friends, order Mojitos or a bottle of Rose and enjoy the view;
Note to management – A happy hour after work to watch the sunset would be nice?
Entrée par le Port Noir
Quai de Cologny 5
1223 Cologny (Genève)
Also opened for the Fetes de Geneve from 1 to 11 August is Les Terrasses de Geneve (formerly Les Terrasses de Platinum) near Place du Rhone. This was packed on Saturday evening with a lively crowd who were there to party at the Fete. Space is limited so the bar can get very crowded – arrive early to avoid queues.
Les Terrasses du Vogue has also opened from 1 to 11 August for the Fete de Geneve. Attracting a smarter crowd, this is located in an excellent position opposite the Beau Rivage hotel with a great view of the Jet D’Eau.
La Terrasse is open all summer on Quai Wilson and is a favourite venue of ours. The location is ideal for a pre work coffee and a croissant in the morning (it opens at 8am) and for an afterwork apero. It gets very busy on warm summer nights when the bar spills out onto the surrounding grass.
Recommended; Les Voiles (for location, ambience and style) and La Terrasse (for a casual drink or early morning coffee)
